Six Sigma is a set of techniques and tools for process improvement. Six Sigma seeks to improve the quality of the output of a process by identifying and removing the causes of defect and minimizing variability in manufacturing and business processes. It uses a set of quality management methods, mainly empirical, statistical method, and creates a special infrastructure of people within the organisation, who are experts in these methods. Each sis sigma project carried out within the organisation follows a define sequence of steps and specific value targets, for example reduce process cycle time, reduce pollution, reduce costs, increase customer satisfaction and increase profits etc..

In accordance to Deming's method there are two approaches;
DMAIC - Generally this approach is adopted by organisation who aim at improving their existing business processes.
DMADV - This method is adopted by organisation who aim at create new product design or process design
The DMAIC method has five phases; - Define - Measure - Analysis - Improvement - Control
Define - The system, the voice of the customers and their requirements, and the project goals specifically.
Measure - The key aspects of the current processes and collect relevant data; calculate the "as-is" process capability.
Analysis - The data to investigate the cause - effect relationships. Determine what the relationships are, and attempt to ensure that all factors have been considered. Seek out root causes of the defect under investigation.
Improve or optimize the current process based upon the data analysis using techniques such as design of experiments etc..
Control the future state process to ensure that any deviation from the target are corrected before they result in defects. Implement control system such as Statistical Process Control, production boards, visual work places, and continuously monitor the process.
The DMADV method also has five phases:- Define - Measure - Analysis - Design - Verify
Define the design goals that are consistent with customer demands, interested parties requirements and enterprise strategy.
Measure & identify CTQ (Critical to Quality), measure product capabilities, production process capability, and measure risk.
Analyse to develop and design alternatives
Design an improved alternative, best suited per analysis in the previous step
Verify the design, carryout pilot runs, implement the production process and handover to the process owner.
